S@#% My K-Boyfriend Says: "Koreaboos" and Yellow Fever

smykboyfriendsays:

This is a post that’s been in my mind for a while. I apologize in advance, as I’m not the most articulate person in the world and often times I have trouble putting the thoughts in my head down in words, but please bear with me as I try to get my point across.

I’ve seen a lot of blogs,…

Ok, so.

Koreaboos. Weeaboos. A lot of us who have been ~*~ interested ~*~ in (insert country here) before traveling there or being actually educated about that place have probably all been there. Obviously includes me. BIGGEST CASSIOPEIA EVER OMG. You know, when I was like 16 years old. (still sort of a cassie tho shh)

But the moment you spout subtle racist comments (i.e., “I only date Asians b/c of x and y reasons” or “x country is so much superior to y country b/c of whatfuckever reasons”) is when it’s not ok. Being a so-called Weeaboo/Koreaboo is crossing the line the moment people of that culture or country are being objectified. The moment you are obviously viewing them as something other than an individual being is when it is not alright. You throw in “asian” or “korean/chinese/japanese” when it honestly does NOT need to be there (i.e., “it was her first time hitting on a japanese guy!”) is when it’s creepy and gross.

“Americaboo” doesn’t exist for the same exact reason that racism against white people doesn’t exist. We are a very dominate culture and people interested in our culture are not, by our own personal views, viewed as being strange or weird. OH you’re in the US and are interested in things, that’s cool/normal/EXPECTED.

PS, not attacking you. Just sharing my fee fees on the topic. Lots of people who are “(whatever)aboos” usually don’t honestly realize how they seem to other people. Hence the term that classifies them. It literally is not a positive term. As an ~*~Asian Studies Major~*~ it is so easy to point out the people that are, unknowingly, being racist and those who are giving their major/interests a fair and even chance.

The end.
